Our teacher Sharon Joy is passionate about sharing music with children.
She is eager to create a fun, informal, social setting that encourages engagement and supports each child's musical development.
Sharon Joy has been composing, performing and teaching music for over 30 years in a variety of educational and spiritual venues. She is presently Associate Professor of Music Education at Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches, LA. Her specialties are elementary and early childhood music education. She has taught music to students from early childhood to the graduate level in public and private schools and at the university level.
Joy was introduced to Music Together® 15 years ago while teaching at an afterschool arts program for young children with special needs. She immediately saw the value in the program and is thrilled to (finally) be teaching Music Together classes here in Natchitoches, LA! She believes that all children can enjoy music when given the opportunity. Music Together classes provide an informal, joyful musical experience for the whole family, while creating a space for children to participate in community music-making at their own developmental level.
Joy earned her D.M.A. (Doctorate in Musical Arts) at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, where she served on the music education faculty. She has been trained in the OPERA America's Music! Words! Opera! curriculum and the Metropolitan Opera Guild's Creating Original Opera curriculum and has facilitated the creation of over 30 original student operas. She served as a teaching artist for Houston Grand Opera in that capacity. She also holds Level One Orff Certification.
As a music educator, Joy has presented at many educational and cultural conferences, including the conference of the Northeastern Division of NAfME (The National Association for Music Education), Texas Music Educators Association conference, Louisiana Music Educators Association Convention, and the Gulf Coast Orff Association. For many years she presented the Music is Basic training for Houston Independent School District elementary teachers through Project Grad.
Sharon Joy has composed and released two musical recording of original songs for children and youth. For more about We are the Future and other information about Sharon Joy and JoySounds, see www.joysounds.net
